Jitsi Meet

Jitsi Meet is open source video conferencing you can use on the public meet.jit.si server or run on your own hardware. Community groups, schools, privacy-minded teams and companies embedding calls into their own apps use it. The public server is free for meetings, and the software itself is free to self-host with no licence fee.

What the free plan gives you

• Free meetings on meet.jit.si with no time limit stated by the vendor
• Rooms that participants can join from a link without an account
• Screen sharing, chat, recording to Dropbox, live streaming to YouTube and breakout rooms
• Browser, desktop and mobile apps
• Fully open source under the Apache 2.0 licence, so self-hosting is free and unlimited
• The public instance is reported to support up to 100 participants per call

Where the free plan stops

• Since August 2023 the first person into a room on meet.jit.si must sign in with a Google, GitHub or Facebook account to become moderator; others can join anonymously.
• Call quality on the public server depends on shared capacity, and large calls degrade before any hard cap.
• No admin console, SLA or support on the free public instance.

The paid route is Jitsi as a Service (JaaS) from 8x8, which hosts and supports Jitsi for you and is priced by monthly active users; the pricing page did not load at the time of checking. Self-hosting is the other route and costs only your server.

Who it suits

meet.jit.si is fine for ad-hoc calls, small groups and anyone who does not want another Zoom account. Organisations that need guaranteed capacity, branding or compliance should self-host or use JaaS rather than relying on the public server.
