About Firebase

Firebase is Google's backend-as-a-service for mobile and web apps, bundling authentication, two databases, file storage, hosting and serverless functions. Indie developers and startups use it to ship an app without running servers. Its free tier is the Spark plan, which has no time limit and no card required.

What the free plan gives you

Spark quotas are set per product. Cloud Firestore allows 1 GiB of stored data, 10 GiB a month of egress, 50K reads, 20K writes and 20K deletes a day. Realtime Database gives 1 GB stored, 10 GB a month downloaded and 100 simultaneous connections. Cloud Storage on new buckets includes 5 GB-months stored and 100 GB a month downloaded. Hosting offers 10 GB of storage and 360 MB a day of transfer. Authentication includes 50K monthly active users (50 MAUs for SAML and OIDC). Cloud Functions covers 2M invocations, 400K GB-seconds and 200K CPU-seconds a month with 5 GB of outbound networking.

Where the free plan stops

The daily Firestore caps and the 360 MB a day hosting transfer are what most apps hit first: a modest launch-day spike can exhaust 50K reads by lunchtime. Some products, including Cloud Functions in newer projects and anything that calls other Google Cloud APIs, require the Blaze plan. Blaze is pay-as-you-go with no monthly fee: the Spark quotas carry over free and you pay only for usage above them, and eligible new users get $300 in credit.

Who it suits

Prototypes, portfolio apps and small internal tools fit comfortably inside Spark. Anything with real users should move to Blaze early and set a budget alert, since the plan itself costs nothing until you pass the free quotas, and the daily Spark ceilings make it a poor place to be caught on launch day.

When to upgrade to a paid plan

Stay on the free plan while you're comfortably under the free plan's limit (Spark plan: 50K auth MAUs, 1 GiB Firestore, 10 GB hosting). It's worth moving to a paid plan once you consistently bump into that ceiling, need to remove branding, or want features the free tier holds back.
