About Orkas

Orkas is a local-first desktop app for macOS, Windows, and Linux that directs a team of specialist AI agents to handle work like research, content creation, video production, data analysis, and office automation. The desktop client is open source under the MIT license, with source available on GitHub, so it can be self-hosted and inspected. The app itself is free to download and use. It ships with managed official models billed in credits if you want them, and a bring-your-own-provider option that routes usage and cost directly to your own model provider, bypassing Orkas credits entirely. A hosted paid tier is described as still in development.

The free plan in practice

What you can actually do on Orkas's free plan (Free desktop app, bring your own model provider or use limited managed credits), where it stops, and when it's worth paying.

What you can do free

  • Free, MIT-licensed desktop app for macOS, Windows, and Linux
  • Coordinates specialist AI agents for research, documents, slides, and more
  • Self-hostable, source available on GitHub
  • Bring-your-own-provider support to avoid Orkas credit costs

Where it stops

  • Managed official models are billed in credits if you don't supply your own provider
  • Own-provider usage still incurs charges from that provider
  • Hosted paid tier (Lite) is still in development

When to upgrade to a paid plan

Orkas is open source, so self-hosting is free and unlimited. The only reason to pay is convenience: choose a hosted or cloud option when you'd rather not run and maintain it yourself, or need official support.
