About Joplin

Joplin is a productivity tool for organising your work. In its own words: Joplin, the open source note-taking application.

What the free plan gives you

Free and open source note app.

Because Joplin is open source, the ceiling is your own infrastructure rather than a billing page. Self-hosting costs nothing but your time, and a hosted plan is there if you would rather not run it.

What it does

Joplin covers multimedia notes, work together, customise it, our sponsors.

When you would pay

You may never need to. The free tier is not a funnel step here, so the sensible move is to use it until something it genuinely cannot do forces the question.

We list Joplin because the free plan was checked against its own pricing page, not because a vendor asked. If it has changed, tell us and we will re-check it.

The free plan in practice

What you can actually do on Joplin's free plan (Free and open source note app), where it stops, and when it's worth paying.

When to upgrade to a paid plan

Joplin is open source, so self-hosting is free and unlimited. The only reason to pay is convenience: choose a hosted or cloud option when you'd rather not run and maintain it yourself, or need official support.

What's the free tier actually like?

Used Joplin's free plan? Tell people what it was really like — what you hit, what surprised you, whether the limits held. No account needed.

Comments appear straight away. We remove spam and abuse; we don't remove criticism, including of tools that pay us.

No comments yet. If you've used the free plan, you know something the pricing page doesn't say.
