Appwrite is an open source backend platform offering Auth, Databases, Storage, Functions, Realtime, Messaging and Sites, positioned as a self-hostable alternative to Firebase and Supabase. Its Free plan on Appwrite Cloud is aimed at hobby projects, and the whole stack can be self-hosted with no limits.

What the free plan gives you

Appwrite Cloud Free includes 5 GB of bandwidth, 2 GB of storage, 750K function executions and 75K monthly active users. Each project gets 1 database, 1 bucket and 2 functions, with 15-minute build timeouts, and you can have 2 projects. Support is community-only. Because Appwrite is open source, running it on your own server gives you unlimited projects, databases and functions for the cost of the hardware.

Where the free plan stops

The structural caps are what push people to pay, not the traffic numbers. One database and one bucket per project rules out most real apps that need separate collections for different data types, and 2 functions is tight for anything beyond a demo. The Pro plan starts at $25 a month and lifts you to 2 TB bandwidth, 150 GB storage, 3.5M executions, 200K MAUs, unlimited databases, buckets and functions, 45-minute builds, email support and $10 of monthly compute credit for database usage. Enterprise adds SLAs, SOC 2, HIPAA and 24/7 support.

Who it suits

Side projects, student apps and prototypes fit the Free plan well, and 75K MAUs is more auth headroom than most will ever use. Anything production-grade with several data models should either self-host or expect Pro from day one, since the per-project limits rather than usage will be what you run into.
